For many who have unspecified back pain, there may be swelling that causes the pain. Swollen muscles or other soft tissue can place pressure on nerves, causing pain. Weak back muscles can result in too much pressure between the vertebrae, thus causing inflammation. Drugs and injections can effectively reduce inflammation, swelling, and relieve pain. However, there are harmful side-effects from long-term use of drugs and injections and their efficacy may decrease after long-term use.

Core exercises strengthen core muscles. Strong core muscles support the torso and effectively help to make more space between the vertebrae, alleviating pressure on the vertebrae and thus reducing inflammation, swelling, and pain. Exercise and increased core strength reduce or eliminate the cause of the pain. Exercise also offers many other benefits to health and well-being, as discussed in earlier posts on this forum.

Drugs and injections may be useful and even appropriate for a very brief bout of acute unspecified back pain. While it’s tempting and easy to rely on drugs and injections to alleviate unspecified back pain, if the efficacy decreases, drugs or injections may not be effective after long-term use, thus leaving no option for temporary pain relief. Drugs and injections merely mask the cause of the pain, while exercise addresses the cause of the pain. Exercise is the best way to alleviate unspecified back pain for the long-term pain and may help you to become completely pain-free.
